Position Overview:
The Senior Underwriting Specialist is responsible for evaluating mortality and morbidity risks associated with life insurance applications. This role demands exceptional analytical, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal abilities, along with a deep understanding of industry standards and robust data analysis skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Medical and Financial Underwriting
- Determine age and coverage requirements in line with external reinsurance agreements.
- Evaluate Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and governance risks prior to contract initiation.
- Analyze client risk factors and application data to accurately assess mortality or morbidity risks.
- Review medical documentation to evaluate life expectancy.
- Assess the Fair Market Value of corporate policies to validate coverage amounts.
- Collaborate with client advisors (Tax professionals, Accountants, Legal experts) to ensure precise data representation in risk evaluations.
- Engage with specialists, including actuaries and medical professionals, to comprehend risk factors.
- Formulate underwriting decisions and mortality ratings based on medical expertise.
- Negotiate reinsurance agreements as necessary.
- Document findings and prepare for compliance audits.
- Review existing policies to confirm calculated amounts are appropriate.
- Ensure adherence to treaty terms with each reinsurer.
- Conduct thorough reviews of the Medical Information Bureau (MIB) on each case.
- Communicate risk assessment methodologies clearly for auditing purposes.
- Deliver presentations and conduct on-site meetings with brokers and advisors to discuss underwriting processes.
- Handle special underwriting requests and negotiate terms as needed.
- Stay updated on medical advancements and industry trends.
- Maintain strong relationships with reinsurers regarding individual case management.
AML Risk Management:
- Evaluate all Universal Life clients according to internal AML protocols.
- Collaborate with the Corporate AML office to refine internal policies.
- Review client applications and disclosures thoroughly.
- Assess corporate entities based on ownership structures and financial health.
- Support the internal Governance team with investigations into suspicious underwriting cases.
Reinsurance Strategy:
- Analyze reinsurance decisions for market competitiveness.
- Negotiate complex cases with reinsurers to secure optimal offers.
- Calculate reserves in accordance with reinsurance treaty standards.
- Provide insights to the Director of Underwriting on emerging trends in reinsurance.
Risk Assessment:
- Adhere to established underwriting principles and guidelines for new applications.
- Stay informed about current insurance sales strategies.
- Comply with the organization's Business Conduct and Ethics standards.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree.
- 5-10 years of experience in underwriting.
- Progressing towards professional designations such as ALU II or FALU.
- Familiarity with Underwriting Rules Engine.
- Bilingual proficiency in French is advantageous.
