Course Title: GLA2043HS Real-Time Data for AI and Global Intelligence
Course Synopsis:
This seminar delves into the transformative potential of contemporary digital datasets and advancements in AI for analyzing pressing global challenges. Unlike traditional data sources, which often lag behind reality or fail to capture the complexities of modern economies and societies, real-time data generated from various digital platforms provides immediate insights into current events.
Students will explore how leaders can leverage these real-time datasets and innovative AI tools to proactively identify and address emerging issues. For instance, the availability of satellite imagery allows for near-instantaneous monitoring of poverty, climate fluctuations, and conflict situations. Additionally, AI technologies trained on extensive datasets can uncover critical resources or assess economic and health risks on a global scale.
This course is designed to be accessible, focusing on the implications and opportunities presented by these technological advancements. Through interactive discussions, guest lectures, and practical assignments, participants will engage with non-traditional data and AI methodologies to enhance their understanding of global events and challenges. Students will also critically evaluate the ethical considerations and risks associated with employing these tools in real-world analyses.
Course Details:
Estimated Enrollment: 25 students
Teaching Schedule: Thursdays from 10 AM to Noon
Sessional Appointment Dates: January 1 to April 30, 2025
Compensation:
Salary will be determined based on the lecturer's experience and qualifications, with rates outlined in the collective agreement.
Qualifications:
Minimum: A graduate degree in International Relations is required.
Preferred: Previous teaching experience in relevant subjects is advantageous.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Developing the course syllabus
- Delivering one 2-hour lecture weekly
- Providing office hours for student support
- Preparing and grading assignments and examinations

This position is governed by the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement. Preference will be given to candidates who have achieved the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or III, in accordance with the collective agreement.
