About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Health Promoter to join our team at Nova Scotia Health and IWK Health. As a Health Promoter, you will work with consultants and Public Health colleagues to understand population health needs and apply health promotion strategies to improve health and reduce health inequities.

The successful candidate will work with community partners across multiple levels to take action to create supportive social, economic, and physical environments that protect and promote health. This will involve using evidence-informed strategies to advocate for healthy public policy and system change through community engagement, coalition building, and partnership development.

The Health Promoter will continually assess understanding of community health through ongoing and informal means, gathering local intelligence, seeking out experiences and stories, and using formal community health assessment processes. Strong facilitation and communication skills are essential for building partnerships to advance the work of system/culture change.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Health Promotion/Public Health, with five years of community-based/Public Health experience, or a Master's degree in Health Promotion/Public Health, with two years of community-based/Public Health experience. The candidate should also have experience in planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs, policies, services, and initiatives.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the Core Competencies for Public Health and LEADS, as well as an understanding of a population-based approach. They should also have experience in building strategic partnerships, networks, coalitions, and collaborative working relationships with internal and external partners to support healthy communities work.

The Health Promoter will be required to travel and have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle. Competencies in other languages are an asset, with French being preferred.

About You
  • Experience in planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion programs, policies, services, and initiatives

  • Demonstrated negotiation and conflict management skills; strong judgement, decision making, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated planning, organizational, and time management skills; ability to deal with competing priorities, plan, and be self-directed
  • Demonstrated understanding of the influence of the social determinants of health and health equity on population health
  • Experience with or knowledge of supportive resources such as health impact assessments
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary setting with a strong focus on citizen/community
