Provincial Mental Health Counselor

Your Opportunity:
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Mental Health Therapist (MHT) with a robust background in addiction treatment to enhance our services. At Alberta Health Services, we provide intensive, short-term residential support for adults facing challenges related to substance use and gambling. The MHT operates within a structured clinical environment to optimize recovery outcomes, ensuring that clients with co-occurring mental health disorders receive comprehensive treatment plans and interventions that prioritize mental health recovery.
In this role, you will work under a collaborative, recovery-oriented care model, delivering evidence-based assessments, cooperative care planning, crisis intervention, and therapeutic services in both individual and group formats. You will also engage in case consultations, apply trauma-informed therapeutic approaches, and facilitate referrals for clients dealing with various mental health concerns. Your expertise in addiction and mental health strategies will be crucial in providing high-quality, holistic care that fosters recovery and wellness.
Maintaining accurate and timely documentation of client records is essential, as is your ability to coordinate referrals for ongoing mental health support within the community. Your success will hinge on your commitment to teamwork, effective communication, conflict resolution, time management, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, as well as your dedication to enhancing the mental health and addiction competencies of the team.
Description:
As a Mental Health Therapist, you will utilize a variety of therapeutic modalities (individual, family, and group) to assist individuals facing significant mental health challenges. You will operate both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing evidence-informed practices in crisis intervention, assessment, consultation, referral, case management, and treatment.
Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree in Psychology, Social Work (clinical specialization), Occupational Therapy, Nursing, or Psychiatric Nursing, with training in mental health assessment and psychotherapy. Active or eligible for registration with the relevant Alberta regulatory college.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Authorization to conduct mental health psycho-social interventions is necessary. Familiarity with DSM diagnoses and a proven ability to deliver targeted interventions to help clients manage their mental health symptoms effectively. A solid foundation of knowledge and experience working with clients with substance use issues is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in facilitating individual and group therapy in both outpatient and inpatient mental health settings, as well as in addiction treatment environments. Formal training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is advantageous.
