Senior Software Architect for Space Missions

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mission Software Architect to join our team at Sierra Space. As a key member of our Orbital Mission and Services (OMS) division, you will play a pivotal role in defining mission parameters and deriving mission requirements for innovative spacecraft development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide mission-oriented perspectives throughout the design lifecycle
  • Assess key mission performance attributes to ensure alignment with customer objectives
  • Develop and maintain software architectures for spacecraft systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and develop cutting-edge software products
  • Perform coding, debugging, testing, and troubleshooting of systems and software throughout the development process

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or other related discipline and typically 10 or more years of relevant experience
  • Relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of required education
  • Thorough understanding of Computer Aided Engineering tools
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering principles and practices
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret U.S. Security Clearance is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in a related field of study
  • Proficiency in C++, Python, and Agile Development
  • Progressive experience in software development and software architecture including both subsystem and system level development
  • Experience in architecting spacecraft flight software
  • Experience with programming and debugging, SW Unit Test / SW Rqmts Verification, and basic Linux
  • Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Git, and Jenkins
  • Experience participating in Software Engineering activities through successful completion of design milestones such as System Requirements Reviews (SRRs), System Functional Reviews (SFRs), and Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews (PDRs and CDRs)
  • Experience across all phases of the program development lifecycle, from capture through design, implementation, and test
  • Background in the Aerospace and Defense Industry
  • Motivated self-starter with a curiosity and desire to learn
  • Critical thinker who is not afraid to acknowledge gaps and ask questions early
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience with flight software, discrete time simulation, software models, and hardware communication protocols (MIL-STD-1553, RS-422/485, etc)
  • Ability to trade mission attributes to achieve design to cost and schedule constraints while maintaining mission objectives
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with technical and specialty subject matter expert engineers
