Position Overview
The Pharmacy Technician supports the Pharmacist in managing the technical components of prescription processing and administrative responsibilities, enhancing the Pharmacist's capacity to deliver patient care. The Pharmacy Technician is expected to engage in all facets of Pharmacy Operations as a collaborative team member, playing a vital role in providing exceptional customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Receiving prescriptions from customers, adhering to provincial legal and regulatory requirements, and evaluating the prescription for completeness, including details such as Name, Address, Date of Birth, Allergies, Third Party Information, Special Requests, Prescriber, and Generic/Brand options, while prioritizing prescriptions according to established guidelines.
- Executing Computer Functions as instructed by the Pharmacist, including Data Entry, Price Verification, Patient Information Updates, and accurately interpreting and processing written prescriptions, including Latin abbreviations, drug name recognition, dosage calculations, refills, report generation, and patient profile checks.
- Dispensing prescriptions under the supervision of the Pharmacist, selecting appropriate products, conducting accuracy checks, including 7-point, Visual, and DIN checks, measuring and preparing products, labeling, and organizing for pharmacist verification, obtaining necessary approvals for verbal refills where permitted, and facilitating all aspects of Cognitive Services.
- Managing Inventory Control by assisting the Pharmacist in maintaining adequate stock levels of medications and supplies, regularly checking for and removing expired products, organizing the Will Call Bin, processing returns, ordering drugs and supplies, utilizing preferred wholesalers for pharmacy purchases, and maintaining organized pharmacy shelves.
- Ensuring General Cleanliness by stocking prescription filling supplies, keeping the dispensary organized and tidy, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, and ensuring that packaging and dispensing equipment, computers, and fax machines are clean and operational.
- Providing Clerical Support by organizing and filing prescriptions, invoices, reports, correspondence, and memos, as well as completing any assigned administrative tasks.
- Assisting with Over-the-Counter (OTC) Operations, including ordering, stocking, and cashier duties as designated by the OTC Manager or Pharmacist.
