At Campus Wellness, we are dedicated to supporting all students at the University of Waterloo. Our team of professionals offers comprehensive medical care and mental health services through an inclusive, interconnected, and collaborative framework.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible to the Nursing Supervisor for delivering primary health services to students and their dependents. Utilizing a client-centered approach, the Clinical Nurse Specialist provides clinical nursing services, health education, counseling, crisis intervention, emergency care, and ongoing medical treatment for the university community. In partnership with colleagues, the Clinical Nurse Specialist ensures the delivery of quality client care while facilitating the effective operation of medical services.

Key Responsibilities

Quality Care Delivery

  • Provide exceptional nursing care in a dynamic clinical environment, adhering to standards set by the College of Nurses.
  • Evaluate each patient's physical and mental health status, offer recommendations based on assessments, and accurately document findings in a comprehensive manner that reflects observations, assessments, management plans, and interventions.

Accountability

  • Deliver care in complex situations where client conditions are unpredictable.
  • Engage in crisis intervention, family planning, immunization clinics, alcohol counseling, nutritional guidance, and health education.
  • Uphold all confidentiality standards of nursing practice.

Priority Setting

  • Independently assess acuity levels using established triage protocols.

Adaptability

  • Clinical Nurses rotate between the Student and Family Health Clinics, fulfilling various nursing roles within Campus Wellness.
  • Must be flexible in changing roles daily to ensure the smooth flow of medical services as a primary focus. Candidates should be prepared to work in Immunizations, Dispensary, Resource, Triage, the Student Clinic, and the Family Health Clinic, as well as serve as assessment nurses.

Qualifications

  • RN graduate from an accredited School of Nursing and a member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Preference will be given to candidates holding a Bachelor's degree.
  • Current CPR or Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required.
  • Completion of a recognized triage course or willingness to obtain one within one year of employment.
  • Preference for candidates with a recognized patient assessment course.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience providing patient care across various age groups and addressing a wide range of health care issues.
  • Experience with health promotion principles, including immunizations, communicable diseases, sexual health, and harm reduction strategies.
  • Required experience in public health, emergency, urgent care, or crisis intervention.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records is an asset.
  • Proven history of positive working relationships with colleagues, professional staff, and inter-professional teams.
  • Highly developed organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, collaborate as part of a team, and make clinical decisions within their professional scope.
  • Successful candidates must be willing and able to function in the role of resource nurse with appropriate training and mentorship.
  • Maintain a clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
