Environmental Microbiology Laboratory Technologist
Join the Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS) team, a vital component of the health care system dedicated to enhancing public health through precise laboratory testing.

At PLMS, we are committed to fostering healthy communities by ensuring equitable access to high-quality laboratory services that prioritize patient safety and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage in daily operations within the Environmental Microbiology Program, conducting tests on drinking, recreational, and wastewater using advanced techniques for the detection of public health indicators.
- Analyze ready-to-eat food samples for microbial indicators to evaluate sanitary conditions.
- Contribute to investigations of foodborne and waterborne disease outbreaks by analyzing various samples for pathogens using a range of detection methods.
- Examine stool and vomit samples for Norovirus using RT-PCR during gastrointestinal disease outbreak investigations.
- Prepare necessary stock solutions and reagents in accordance with established protocols.
- Address inquiries regarding referred tests, collaborating with team leads and supervisors as needed to ensure exceptional customer service.
- Perform all necessary functions to produce final reports, including quality control assessments and troubleshooting sample adequacy.
Qualifications:
- Certification from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
- A minimum of one year of relevant experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills & Knowledge:
- Fundamental understanding of microbiology, molecular biology, and biosafety practices.
- Proficiency in scientific writing and literature review is advantageous.
- Ability to troubleshoot unexpected laboratory results effectively.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational capabilities.
- Self-motivated with effective time management skills and the ability to work independently.
- Experience operating laboratory equipment and utilizing relevant software.
- Commitment to understanding and adhering to legislative obligations and provincial commitments regarding Indigenous rights and reconciliation.
- Awareness of the socio-economic and historical contexts affecting Indigenous Peoples and a commitment to fostering cultural safety and anti-racism initiatives.
