Junior Software Developer (Software, BCI, Gaming)

The University of Calgary is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Junior Software Developer to join their team. As a Junior Software Developer, you will be responsible for supporting and contributing to multiple novel engineering research initiatives within the BCI Engineering Core program.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and maintain foundational technologies for major research initiatives.
  2. Assist in preparing project-related communications, including updates for stakeholders and sponsors, and presentations for public or academic audiences.
  3. Plan, organize, and set up project team meetings.
  4. Provide information and support developing various reports, including annual project reports for sponsors.
  5. Consolidate, manage, and prepare data from multiple applications, websites, and databases for analysis.
  6. Manage your own time effectively and ensure Program leadership is informed of activities and progress of work.
  7. Establish and maintain effective, productive relationships with other Program team members.
  8. Acquire an understanding of the project scope, aims, deliverables, timelines, and activities.
  9. Acquire and analyze EEG, EMG, and other bio-signals.
  10. Develop and distribute research and commercial software.
  11. Implement and apply machine learning techniques.
  12. Develop scalable software, quality assurance, and associated best practices.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university, preferably in an engineering, computer science, or similar field.
  2. Education and/or work experience in: Computer Science, Game Development, Electrical, Software or Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Applied Mathematics, or other related areas.
  3. Significant experience in serious game development using modern technologies (e.g. Unity Engine, Unreal Engine, Godot, Lua, Bevy).
  4. Ability and willingness to support a collaborative, team-focused environment.
  5. Demonstrable experience in software prototyping and development (can provide portfolio on request for evaluation).
  6. Significant experience and hands-on knowledge of design processes for complex projects, including working with diverse stakeholders to deliver products within proposed deadlines.
  7. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills, including a high level of comfort interacting with children and parents in a clinical research setting.
  8. Strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to prioritize activities.
  9. The ability to multi-task with ease and efficiency and work in a dynamic environment is required.
  10. Strong sense of initiative and willingness to take responsibility for task completion.
  11. Knowledge of university policies related to research, including research ethics, contracts, agreements, and funding processes.
