Human Factors Engineering Expert

We are seeking a Human Factors Engineering Expert to join our team. The Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions division at BWXT NEC focuses on the design, production, development, testing, and servicing of on-power refueling systems, reactor maintenance tools, and nuclear medicine delivery equipment utilized globally.

JOB SUMMARY:
In this role, you will engage in technically demanding projects as part of the Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineering team, supporting on-power refueling systems for CANDU reactors. You will be involved in the design of automated and semi-automated fueling machinery, robotic systems, and maintenance tools for CANDU reactors and related systems, collaborating within a multi-disciplinary design team. We are looking for a qualified individual with a minimum of 5 years of experience to conduct Human Factors assessments in alignment with CNSC requirements, CSA N Human factors in design for nuclear power plants, and the NUREG Human Factors Engineering Program Review Model.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducting operating experience reviews, functional requirements analysis, task analysis, and human error analysis, while providing human factors design recommendations and verifying or accepting the work of other Human Factors Analysts.
  • Determining the necessary level of Human Factors Engineering involvement based on project scope.
  • Utilizing your expertise in hardware and software controls, displays, and user interactions with the Human System Interface.
  • Documenting findings in Human Factors Engineering Summary Reports.
  • Assisting in the development of Human Factors Engineering Verification and Validation Plans.
  • Performing and documenting design verification and validation tasks.
  • Contributing to the creation of proposals that encompass Human Factors Engineering aspects.
  • Supporting other engineering deliverables as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree in Human Factors Engineering, Engineering Psychology, Industrial Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on Human Factors coursework.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a qualified Human Factors Specialist.
  • P.Eng. designation or eligibility to obtain it in the near future.
  • Proven experience in Human Factors Design within regulated, high-stakes industries such as Nuclear, Aerospace, Defense, Oil and Gas, and Medical.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with project team members, vendors, and clients to ensure project scope and requirements are clearly understood and met.

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Active membership in a recognized Human Factors/Ergonomics society (e.g., HFES, ACE).
  • Experience within the Canadian Nuclear Industry.
  • General understanding of Engineering Change Control (ECC) concepts applicable to the nuclear sector or other industries.
  • Human Factors qualifications at OPG/Bruce Power.
