Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sentry Full time $189,000 - $214,000

About Sentry

Our mission is to empower developers to create superior software more efficiently, allowing us to rediscover the joy of technology. With over $217 million in funding and a community of 100,000+ organizations supporting our vision, we are developing advanced performance and error monitoring solutions that enable companies like Disney, Microsoft, and Atlassian to minimize bug fixes and maximize product innovation. If you are passionate about building tools that enhance the digital experience, we invite you to join us in crafting the future of software monitoring.

About the Role
As the Engineering Manager for the Site Reliability team, you will guide a group of Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) to ensure the robustness of Sentry's offerings as we expand. The SRE team is responsible for overseeing production environments and managing incident responses to maintain the availability of critical systems. They play a vital role in shaping the engineering culture by advocating for operational standards (such as SLOs) and infrastructure design principles validated through real-world application. Collaboration with product engineering teams is essential to ensure the delivery of high-quality products and features.

In this position, you will work closely with your team and engage with other engineering disciplines to develop valuable features that align with our business objectives. You will foster a strong team identity through personalized mentoring and accountability for operational responsibilities and project outcomes. Your leadership will be crucial in adapting the SRE function to meet the evolving needs of engineering as Sentry progresses.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Cultivate and mentor a team of skilled and driven SREs
  2. Establish strategic direction for the team, anticipating challenges related to growth and scalability
  3. Engage in quarterly planning sessions to help the team set realistic milestones
  4. Communicate project outcomes to engineering, product, and design teams
  5. Contribute to Sentry's cloud strategy
  6. Promote a collaborative and healthy work culture that reflects our core values
  7. Participate in the on-call escalation process, being available when necessary

You Will Thrive in This Role If You:

  1. Enjoy mentoring and facilitating the growth of fellow engineers
  2. Embrace unique challenges on a daily basis
  3. Are passionate about developing processes that minimize repetitive tasks
  4. Get energized by transforming lessons learned from incidents into actionable improvements for engineering
  5. Appreciate working alongside a team of SREs committed to continuous operational enhancement

Qualifications:

  1. 5+ years of experience in software engineering
  2. Ideally, 2+ years of experience in a managerial role
  3. Familiarity with distributed systems in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
  4. Proficiency with system management tools such as Terraform, Kubernetes, Salt, and Envoy
  5. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  6. Experience with globally distributed teams is a plus
  7. Willingness to relocate if necessary
