Animal Care Attendant

Part-Time & Auxiliary Position

About Us

As the sixth largest city in British Columbia, we proudly serve over 150,000 residents. Our vibrant municipality is an excellent workplace, continually evolving through innovative urban planning, inspiring cultural and recreational programs, and advanced transportation systems.

About You / What We Are Looking For
Are you a dedicated team player with a heartfelt commitment to animal welfare? The City of Coquitlam is excited to offer a role for an Animal Care Attendant in a part-time capacity. If you possess a passion for animal care and relevant experience, this position may be ideal for you. Your duties will encompass a combination of manual tasks and animal care responsibilities.

As an Animal Care Attendant, your primary focus will be on delivering exceptional care for all impounded dogs, cats, and small animals. This includes feeding, handling, and ensuring their overall well-being. You will also be crucial in maintaining the cleanliness of kennels and cages. Additionally, you will guide and support volunteers at the shelter. Some routine clerical and administrative tasks will also be part of your responsibilities. While you will work under general supervision, you will have the independence to make decisions within established guidelines. Prepare for a dynamic and fast-paced environment that offers numerous opportunities for personal and professional development. The part-time position entails 21 hours per week, primarily functioning as a dog-boarding attendant. The shift schedule includes Thursday evenings, Friday evenings, and Saturday mornings. Please note that shifts and schedules may change based on operational requirements. We are also seeking auxiliary staff who can offer flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
To excel in this rewarding role, you should have a solid understanding of proper methods, practices, and procedures for the care and feeding of dogs, cats, and small animals. Familiarity with relevant regulations is essential, along with knowledge of medications and routine medical treatments for injured or ill animals. Proficiency in performing routine tasks related to animal feeding and care is required. Exceptional customer service skills are vital, as you will interact courteously and effectively with the public. Strong communication skills are necessary for understanding and following oral instructions, as well as working with minimal supervision. The ability to provide guidance to volunteers is also important. The role will involve completing non-complex forms and reports, as well as lifting and carrying bulky items such as bags of feed, hoses, and large dogs. Requirements for this position include holding a Class 5 BC Driver's license and having completed the 12th grade of school.

Preferred Qualifications
Relevant experience working with animals or an equivalent combination of training and experience will be advantageous. A team-oriented, proactive attitude is highly valued, and prior professional education and experience in Animal Care & Control would be a significant asset.

What We Offer:
This CUPE position offers an hourly wage range based on various factors, including qualifications, knowledge, experience, and skills. You will have the opportunity to join a rapidly growing and diverse team dedicated to supporting the local community and engage in a variety of learning and development opportunities.
