Position Overview

The Charge Nurse serves as a Registered Nurse (RN) who exemplifies clinical excellence and adheres to the core competencies and practice standards set forth by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), alongside the policies and procedures of Southlake Regional Health Centre (SRHC). This role involves collaboration with the interprofessional healthcare team.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, self-motivated, and an integral member of a dynamic interprofessional team focused on delivering high-quality patient care and ensuring efficient patient flow. Responsibilities include providing outstanding care to a diverse population of acute medical-surgical patients in a fast-paced environment.

The Charge Nurse enhances patient and clinical outcomes by:

  • Assessing and facilitating effective care management.
  • Supporting, guiding, and coaching frontline staff.
  • Overseeing patient admissions and discharges.
  • Maintaining a safe and organized work environment.

This role also involves ensuring that assignments are appropriate according to the standards outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario. These considerations influence decision-making regarding care-provider assignments and the necessity for collaboration among care providers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency protocols.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to optimize patient flow and ensure timely admissions and discharges.
  • Act as a clinical resource for unit staff, providing guidance on policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and all healthcare team members.
  • Assess daily staffing needs and communicate requirements to unit leadership.
  • Support frontline staff with problem-solving and knowledge transfer.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate and unit quality initiatives.
  • Facilitate access to necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Engage in quality improvement discussions and identify opportunities for enhancement.
  • Maintain a clean and organized unit environment.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new staff and students.
  • Model best practices to ensure safe and exemplary care delivery.
  • Escalate staff and patient concerns appropriately.
  • Support staff during emergency situations.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of recent acute surgical experience is required.
  • Previous experience as a Charge Nurse is essential.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Excellent clinical assessment and problem-solving skills.
