Job Description

Job Title: Education Assistant II

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Education Assistant II to join our team at Parkland School Division. As an Education Assistant II, you will play a vital role in supporting students with special needs, providing instructional support, and assisting teachers with various tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide instructional support to students with special needs, including assisting with academic tasks, behavioral management, and personal care.
  • Assist teachers with various tasks, such as preparing materials, setting up displays, and supervising students.
  • Work with students in a variety of settings, including classrooms, playgrounds, and community facilities.
  • Travel with students to job placements, community outings, and other activities.
  • Assist students with daily living skills, such as feeding, toileting, and dressing.
  • Provide emotional support and guidance to students, promoting their self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Communicate effectively with students, teachers, and other staff members to ensure a smooth and supportive learning environment.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Teacher Assistant Certificate or Educational Assistant Certificate is an asset.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and First Aid Certificate would be an asset.
  • Courses related to working with students with special needs or that are specifically related to the above-mentioned duties.
  • 1-3 years of related experience.

Working Conditions:

Education Assistants work indoors, except when supervising children outdoors or going on field trips. They may have the same holiday schedule as teachers, including a long summer break and winter and spring breaks. However, they work on a ten-month contract basis and are not paid during the summer months.

Physical Demands:

The Education Assistant II may be required to routinely lift items that comply with the guidelines for safe lifts and transfers. Ability to complete one-person lifts for students up to 35 lbs or participate as part of a two-person lift for students up to 50 lbs and assist with the use of mechanical lifts for students greater than 50 lbs.
