The Pharmacy Technician functions in accordance with the competency guidelines and standards of practice as defined by the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia and relevant legislation, adhering to organizational policies and unit-specific protocols. This role involves processing medication orders that have been clinically assessed for therapeutic suitability and sanctioned by a pharmacist. The technician receives both verbal and written prescriptions from healthcare providers, ensuring their completeness and authenticity. Responsibilities include preparing, processing, and compounding prescriptions while maintaining accuracy and thoroughness in dispensed medications by verifying order entries and conducting final checks on dispensed prescriptions. Additionally, the technician processes prescriptions for temporary inpatient leaves and manages prescription transfers between pharmacies.
Key Responsibilities
- Process clinically reviewed and approved medication orders for patient distribution.
- Receive and verify prescriptions from healthcare practitioners, ensuring their authenticity and completeness.
- Prepare and process prescriptions by entering orders, measuring, counting, and packaging medications, including compounding sterile pharmaceutical products as per established protocols.
- Verify the accuracy and completeness of dispensed prescriptions prepared by self or others.
- Maintain accurate records of drug and personal health information in the pharmacy information system.
- Facilitate prescription transfers between pharmacies.
- Manage prescriptions for temporary inpatient leave by reviewing and converting existing medication orders.
- Maintain inventory and wardstock levels, ensuring the timely filling of requisitions.
- Identify and manage outdated medications for return or destruction.
- Ensure cleanliness and organization of the department work areas.
- Perform clerical duties such as data entry, answering calls, and maintaining medication records.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:
- Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Physical capability to perform the duties of the position.
- Proficiency in keyboarding and related equipment.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Commitment to learning and understanding Indigenous cultural safety and reconciliation initiatives.
