Based in Bedford, Nova Scotia, this role will work closely with the Environmental Services Group (ESG) to ensure the safe operation of facilities and day-to-day activities.
Job Summary:
The Health and Safety Advisor will report to the Health & Safety Manager and be responsible for ensuring the safe operation of facilities, on the environmental side, and day-to-day activities of The Municipal Group of Companies and its affiliates. This includes advising, mentoring, and coaching on the Organization's safety programs, safety policies, company rules, and the provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act as applicable to the Organization's operation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement and continuously improve the Corporate Health & Safety Management System (HSMS) within the area of responsibility.
- Support Operations Managers, Supervisors, and employees through coaching, mentoring, and guidance on all aspects of the corporate health and safety management system and regulatory requirements.
- Develop and deliver health and safety initiatives and measure their effectiveness in influencing performance and meeting corporate expectations.
- Provide clear and actionable direction and communication to Operation Managers, Supervisors, and employees on health and safety matters.
- Participate in the identification and completion of health and safety performance targets and objectives at an operational area level.
- Stay up-to-date with all applicable regulations and legislation for Canada and provide guidance on areas of potential compliance vulnerability.
- Travel to worksites within the area of responsibility to ensure operational conformance and complete health and safety inspections and reporting.
- Complete health and safety audits (COR) to maintain company letters of good standing as required.
- Develop injury and incident prevention strategies for the area of responsibility alongside Operations based on trending and analysis.
- Promote open discussion of safety concerns, best practices, and review accidents/incidents/near misses to identify and develop corrective actions.
- Visit work sites on a regular basis to maintain a 'safety presence' with employees.
Requirements:
- 3-5 years' experience in a safety role.
- Professional Safety designation or willingness to work towards such a designation is also required.
- Knowledge and use of all necessary Government Acts, Legislation, and Requirements.
- Professional written and oral communication skills and employs effective listening skills.
- Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Safety Software System (e.g. eCompliance and Outlook).
- Ability to travel throughout the province to various worksites.
- Tactful and mature demeanor with well-developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with diverse personalities.
