Job Summary:

The EHS Director will lead the development and implementation of the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) strategic direction for the Darlington New Nuclear Project. This includes developing policies, procedures, standards, and metrics to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and champion the EHS strategic direction, including policies, procedures, standards, and metrics.
  • Report progress on goals and initiatives to the DNNP leadership team.
  • Track key EHS metrics and present recommendations and incident information to management and operations as required.
  • Liaise with partners, industry experts, and vendors as appropriate.
  • Participate in the development of EHS plans to ensure AECON standards are maintained in project environments.
  • Communicate policies, procedures, manuals, and standards to project employees and drive alignment of practice across all businesses.
  • Lead EHS training initiatives and handle executive-level escalation of critical incidents or issues.
  • Lead a team of EHS professionals engaged in project execution.
  • Ensure emergency and crisis procedures are established and followed.
  • Report accidents or incidents to stakeholders and legislative bodies as required.
  • Participate in DNNP's crisis management planning to ensure all projects and facilities are prepared for disaster situations.
  • Participate in management, client, and EHS committees.
  • Identify environmental risks and provide mitigation recommendations.
  • Liaise with governmental agencies, community stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and shareholders.
  • Manage the EHS budget and monitor budgets throughout the year.
  • Have experience and understanding of the nuclear industry, including requirements of owners and contractors.
  • Have experience working in a live nuclear environment.
  • Have a history and reputation of strong client relationships.
  • Be knowledgeable of INPO practices and principles and practice same.
  • Have experience with labour relations and managing critical union stakeholders.
  • Recruit and hire EHS team members.
  • Provide supervision and leadership to EHS team members.
  • Work with direct reports to develop individual career development plans.

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated successful experience leading a progressive EHS organization in a project-based environment.
  • Experience in the nuclear industry preferred.
  • Relevant bachelor's degree and CRSP designation.
  • Understanding of implementation complexities within a large joint venture and contractor/union network.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience with public speaking and government relations.
  • Ability to work effectively with other departments to identify and create solutions that are conducive to continuing projects/operations efficiently while mitigating organizational risk.
  • Able to travel between different office and field locations.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces and/or working at heights if required.
  • In-depth experience and knowledge of WSIB legislation, policies, practices, and nuances.
