Position Overview: The Housing Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting individuals who have previously experienced homelessness in securing and maintaining stable housing. This position operates within a comprehensive case management framework, emphasizing a strengths-based and client-focused methodology. The specialist will collaborate with program participants to develop tailored plans that align with their unique objectives.
Key Duties:
- Deliver case management services to individuals transitioning from homelessness.
- Facilitate connections to relevant community resources and assist with referrals.
- Conduct thorough needs and risk evaluations.
- Engage with clients through a culturally sensitive lens.
- Provide in-home and community-based support to enhance daily living skills (e.g., budgeting, grocery shopping, cooking, etc.).
- Identify potential eviction risks and work collaboratively with clients to mitigate these factors.
- Transport clients to appointments and assist with daily tasks as necessary.
- Advocate for tenant and landlord rights in accordance with relevant legislation.
- Guide clients through the complexities of the justice and healthcare systems.
- Support clients in locating and securing suitable housing options.
- Assist clients in obtaining and sustaining income support.
- Provide support to individuals facing severe mental health and substance use challenges.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and partner organizations.
- Exhibit professionalism and contribute positively to team dynamics.
- Demonstrate strong organizational and time management capabilities.
- Facilitate housing transitions and liaise with landlords.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
- Participate in after-hours support as needed.
- Assist with data management and reporting as required.
Qualifications:
- Preferred Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline.
- Experience in the homeless services sector with a strong understanding of community resources.
- Solid foundation in mental health and addiction issues.
- Familiarity with Housing First and Harm Reduction principles.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong organizational abilities and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to fostering a positive team environment.
- Willingness to engage in continuous learning and adapt to diverse practices.
- Ability to work autonomously and assess risk effectively.
- Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for work purposes.
- Basic First Aid certification within the first month of employment.
- Clear criminal record check for vulnerable sectors.
- Awareness of Indigenous rights and reconciliation initiatives is advantageous.
- Commitment to anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices.
Work Environment:
- Primarily outreach-focused, involving home visits to clients.
- Standard working hours with flexibility for urgent situations.
