Chief Executive Officer for Energy Transformation

Oakville, Ontario, Canada Future Energy Oakville Full time

About Future Energy Oakville

Future Energy Oakville (FEO) was established to tackle the pressing climate crisis through localized energy innovation. Following the development of our community energy framework, FEO is focused on three primary objectives: enhancing energy efficiency by 40%, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, and enabling the community to retain $7 billion in energy savings. We operate as an independent not-for-profit entity, backed by municipal support, investors, local collaborators, and proactive citizens. Our mission is deeply embedded in the community energy strategy (CES).

About the Position

The Executive Director (ED) plays a pivotal role in mobilizing community efforts to effectively harness the environmental and economic advantages outlined in the community energy strategy. As the representative of the CES to both the community and external stakeholders, the ED must possess the capability to lead, educate, motivate, and drive positive change within the climate sector.

Achievements to Date

Since our inception, we have collaborated with local partners to organize three significant events and published two white papers focused on green energy transformation initiatives for both businesses and residents. Our ambition is to amplify this impact tenfold over the next five years, and we seek a driven ED to guide us on this journey.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive operational strategies to achieve the goals set forth by FEO's Board of Directors, in alignment with the CES.
  • Identify and manage core funding sources to ensure the ongoing success of FEO's operations.
  • Facilitate the formation of various community and industry coalitions to plan, finance, and execute high-priority projects.
  • Position FEO as a vital community resource for blueprints and funding opportunities related to green energy transformation projects.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, community needs, and global developments relevant to priority projects and the CES.
  • Ensure compliance with all FEO policies and procedures, and oversee adherence by all employees, volunteers, and other involved parties.
  • Over time, build and lead a competent management and operational team of qualified experts aligned with the CES's high-priority strategies.
  • Perform any additional duties related to the implementation of the CES or community engagement as assigned by the Board of Directors.
  • Fulfill all statutory obligations of FEO.

Supervision:

This role operates with broad management authority as delegated by the Board of Directors, adhering to the Governance Policy for Delegation of Authority to the ED, along with any additional written directives from the Board Chair or relevant committee chairs.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an Executive Director or in senior management roles.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and financing complex initiatives.
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant fields or equivalent career experience.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain trust-based relationships with stakeholders, partners, and community teams.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, particularly in strategic start-up environments.
  • Technical business acumen with experience in project leadership and management.
  • Track record of translating transformative strategies into effective execution.
  • Experience in the energy sector is advantageous.
  • Passion for building an organization that fosters community-wide energy transformation and serves as a national and global exemplar.
  • Ability to successfully forge alliances and coalitions to achieve established objectives.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, along with public speaking proficiency.
  • Solid understanding of corporate finance and performance metrics.
  • Experience in integrating global best practices in strategy is a plus.

Location:

This position is remote, ideally suited for candidates within the region, until an office is established.

Employment Type:

Full-time, fixed-term contract, with potential for part-time consideration.

Reporting Structure:

This position reports to the Chair of the Board of Directors, with no direct reports initially; however, as the organization expands, all resources will report to this position.
