Key Responsibilities

  • Process incoming specimens and requisitions, ensuring accuracy and completeness of details such as personal health numbers, names, dates of birth, and required tests. Assign laboratory numbers and organize work batches for testing. Communicate with clients to obtain missing information and implement necessary corrections.
  • Prepare specimens for analysis by executing tasks such as slide staining, concentration procedures, selecting suitable primary culture media, inoculating various media, and incubating in accordance with established protocols.
  • Create culture media and stock solutions by weighing dehydrated media and chemicals, dissolving them in appropriate solvents, measuring pH, adjusting as necessary, dispensing media, and sterilizing through filtration or autoclaving.
  • Monitor laboratory supplies and equipment, conduct inventories, consult with users to identify needs, prepare order requisitions for approval, and maintain related stock control records. Collaborate with supervisors regarding inventory issues and related systems.
  • Receive and verify orders, check invoice accuracy, stock shelves, ensure proper storage and dating of media/chemicals/reagents, and distribute supplies. Communicate with suppliers to resolve discrepancies.
  • Provide administrative support by generating labels, entering data into computer systems, maintaining patient and specimen records, relaying phone messages, guiding clients and visitors, completing forms, compiling information and statistics, packaging items for shipping, and sorting and distributing mail.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, including refrigerators, freezers, centrifuges, autostainers, coverslippers, and testing devices, by performing cleaning and temperature monitoring as directed. Execute maintenance procedures according to established guidelines and report equipment malfunctions to the lead hand or designated personnel.
  • Ensure daily cleaning and disinfection of work areas and equipment following established schedules and procedures, including preparing fresh disinfectant solutions, wiping surfaces, cleaning centrifuges, and maintaining safety eyewash and shower stations as per weekly and monthly protocols. Carry out waste management duties in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Completion of Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant training program, and one year of recent, relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in keyboard operation, data entry, and use of word processing and email applications.
  • Ability to type at least 25 words per minute.
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively with others.
  • Proficiency in operating relevant equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to fostering reconciliation in Canada as outlined in TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
  • Knowledge of the social, economic, political, and historical contexts of settler colonialism affecting Indigenous Peoples, and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism and cultural safety.
