Overview:
The 'Animal Inspection Specialist' plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance with regulations regarding the inspection, tracking of animal movements, and management of stray animals within the province.

Key Responsibilities:

During inspections, the Specialist will assess the brands and other identifiers on the animals, as well as review any relevant documentation such as manifests, permits, and bills of sale to ascertain rightful ownership.

Accurate counting of animals is essential, and in cases of disputed ownership, the Specialist may need to withhold sales or proceeds related to the animals in question.

Additionally, the Specialist will be tasked with the impounding, identification, and documentation of stray animals, and will coordinate their care until they can be returned or sold.

Support in resolving claims for damages caused by stray animals will also be part of the role.

The Specialist will collaborate with law enforcement in investigating suspected cases of animal theft, illegal branding, or unlawful confinement.

In instances of legal proceedings, the Specialist may be called upon to provide expert testimony.


Legislative Assistance:
At times, the Specialist may assist with various legislative frameworks, including the Feeder Association Guarantee Act, Line Fence Act, Animal Keepers Act, Health of Animals Act, and Animal Welfare Act.

Qualifications:
The role requires a rotation through various designated inspection sites, including auction markets and abattoirs. Flexibility in work weeks and days is necessary, with potential for overtime. A minimum of a high school diploma is required, with a preference for post-secondary qualifications related to the industry. Experience in inspection operations is advantageous, and proficiency in livestock handling is mandatory. A working knowledge of computer systems and satisfactory typing skills are essential. Candidates must be bondable and possess current first aid certification.

Completion of the Animal Inspection Certification Course within the first year of employment is expected.

Frequent interaction with animal producers necessitates strong communication skills and demonstrated conflict resolution abilities.
