Program Worker Opportunity

The Hamilton Regional Indian Centre is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the urban Aboriginal population of the Greater Hamilton area. We are seeking a highly skilled and culturally sensitive Program Worker to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Program Worker will work collaboratively with the Program Coordinator and other staff to create a culturally safe and welcoming space for our most vulnerable Indigenous brothers and sisters. This includes facilitating effective delivery of meals and programming, as well as acting as a first point of contact for those accessing the Drop-in.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with the Program Coordinator and other staff to create a culturally safe and welcoming space
  • Facilitate effective delivery of meals and programming
  • Act as a first point of contact for those accessing the Drop-in
  • Build and maintain lasting working relationships with community members
  • Prepare and distribute food, drinks, and supplies to community members
  • Training and/or experience in crisis intervention, de-escalation, and conflict resolution
  • High flexibility with strong interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse environment
  • Advanced skills in the use of Microsoft Office applications and 365
  • First Aid or CPR certification
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certification

Requirements:

  • 2-year post-secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Social Service work, or a combination of equivalent and relevant education
  • 2-years of demonstrated and related work experience within an Indigenous organization or community, homelessness and/or social service setting, or a combination of equivalent experience as deemed relevant by the Executive Director
  • Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on the impacts of trauma, family violence, and community outreach
  • Self-Identify as First Nations, Metis, or Inuit
