Toronto, Ontario, Canada Scotiabank Full time

Requisition ID: 204450

Join a purpose-driven team that is committed to achieving results within an inclusive and high-performing culture.

The Senior Manager of Portfolio Oversight plays a crucial role within Scotiabank's Global Risk Management (GRM) International Banking Retail Credit Risk team, located in Toronto, Canada. This position is essential for effective portfolio management, ensuring alignment with our strategic vision while providing vital executive reporting and communication.

As a leader in portfolio oversight, the Senior Manager will promote a customer-centric culture, driving team initiatives to enhance client relationships and utilize the broader bank's resources and expertise. This role is instrumental across our International Business locations, supporting local retail risk and business strategies throughout the International Banking network, while adhering to Scotiabank's Risk Appetite and policy frameworks.

With a comprehensive understanding of both traditional retail mass markets and consumer microfinance segments, the Senior Manager will proficiently identify key performance indicators, assess trends, and formulate risk management strategies. This position is vital in articulating portfolio performance, delivering insights, and making recommendations that will influence the future of our international banking operations.

Key Responsibilities:

Country & Portfolio Oversight

  • Maintain effective monitoring and reporting on country performance trends and results in relation to targets, considering origination trends and portfolio issues by product, channel, segment, and specific programs.
  • Communicate findings with stakeholders, including potential impacts on losses and proposed recommendations to management; prepare updates for executive, regional management, and other International Banking stakeholders.
  • Utilize local information and management information systems (MIS) to gain insights into results, collaborating with GRM partners to identify emerging trends that may affect portfolio performance.
  • Provide month-end and quarter-end executive communications on portfolio trends, identifying and explaining any concerns or deviations.
  • Stay informed on changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operational procedures, management restructurings, and the impact of new technologies.

Relationships & Communications

  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including country managers and senior leaders, to facilitate executive communication, explain deviations, conduct portfolio reviews, and deliver quarter-end and month-end reports.

Governance & Best Practices

  • Ensure that credit policies and procedures are established to balance risk and growth for retail portfolios through ongoing monitoring of key risk measures, and provide guidance on opportunities to expand business where appropriate.
  • Assist in meeting local regulatory requirements from a credit and operational perspective, including the assessment and implementation of effective controls over lending policies and centralized processes for credit fulfillment and collections management.
  • Formalize local origination, account management, and collections policies, ensuring compliance with established Global Risk Policies and making recommendations for improvements.
  • Deliver continuous benchmarking of best practices across the region, evaluating current local policies to identify opportunities for standardizing the credit approach to drive benefits and close gaps.
  • Conduct side-by-side analyses to compare strategies among sites, providing insights and recommendations to establish divisional standards for credit practices.
  • Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be integrated into daily activities and decision-making processes.

Job Requirements:

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to summarize and present insights in a clear and logical manner.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in risk or portfolio management, with a proven track record of leading and implementing change in the financial services sector.
  • Knowledge of customer segmentation, credit scoring models, including behavioral, custom, and credit bureau scores, as well as marketing models and their validation processes.
  • Project management skills to prioritize and balance multiple priorities effectively, with a successful history of leading and implementing banking initiatives.
  • Strong leadership, innovative, and motivational skills to influence change.
  • Experience with projecting delinquency rates, loan loss provisions, and recoveries.
  • Strong financial analysis and writing skills, complemented by sound judgment and creativity.
  • Strong negotiating and networking skills in daily operations.
  • Fluency in Spanish is an asset (not mandatory).
  • A graduate degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field is an asset.
