About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and culturally sensitive Indigenous Patient Navigator to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will play a vital role in ensuring that our Indigenous patients receive culturally safe and client-centered care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as a resource for Indigenous patients, providing guidance and support in navigating the healthcare system.
  • Facilitate relationships between Indigenous community health programs, healthcare providers, and community partners.
  • Provide regular feedback and advice to senior leadership and healthcare teams on improving access to culturally safe care.
  • Support Indigenous patients and their families in accessing healthcare services, cultural and spiritual needs, and community resources.
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams to provide culturally competent and safe practice, including cultural interpretation and health literacy translation services.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a health-related field.
  • Registered or licensed with the appropriate licensing body/college.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, First Nation service delivery organizations, and applicable government programming.
  • Strong understanding of the Mi'kmaw language, culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations in the Atlantic Region.
  • Experience or knowledge of the healthcare system and community-based resources within the zone.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and application of cultural safety and competency within healthcare.
  • Knowledge of federal/provincial health services, including Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) administered by Indigenous Services Canada.
  • Ability to use sound professional judgment, empathy, compassion, and integrity.
