Job OverviewThe Parks Department has an immediate vacancy for a Field Arborist to perform skilled arboriculture tasks for municipal parks, public, and open spaces. The successful candidate will possess thorough knowledge of arboriculture and urban forestry practices, as well as the ability to direct and supervise the work activities of subordinates.
Key Responsibilities- Assigns, directs, and participates in the work of crews engaged in climbing, pruning, tree planting, and removal tasks.
- Issues work requests to crews and contractors for specific arboriculture tasks and provides instruction and checks the work during progress and upon completion.
- Inspects and identifies diseased trees or trees posing an actual or potential hazard to public safety and determines required treatment.
- Provides information, assistance, and interpretation to the public and internal and external stakeholders regarding arboriculture and urban forestry policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Prepares and maintains accurate records, files, and correspondence related to the work performed.
- Assists in the development and implementation of arboriculture maintenance, forest management, and planting programs in accordance with department priorities, regulations, and industry standards.
- Completion of a diploma in Horticulture, Arboriculture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field, plus sound related experience, or an equivalent combination of training or experience.
- Certified Arborist (ISA or equivalent); Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ); and a valid BC Class 5 Drivers Licence.
- Preference will be given for a minimum three years of demonstrated progressive related arboriculture experience in a municipal setting.
