Student Financial Services Advisor

As a Student Financial Services Advisor, your primary role will be to assist and guide students in navigating a variety of financial resources, including government student loans, scholarships, and other funding opportunities. Your support will be crucial in helping students overcome financial obstacles to achieve their educational aspirations.
This vital position within the Student Enrolment & Registrar Services at the University of Lethbridge offers a full-time, ongoing opportunity.
Reporting to the Manager of the Scholarships and Student Finance team, you will provide expert advice and support to prospective, current, and former students regarding the governmental loan process, which encompasses application procedures, confirmation, and repayment strategies.
Your role will involve collaboration with government agencies and various University departments to manage the approval and denial of approximately 5000 government student loan applications each academic year.
Given the technical nature of this position, you will be required to proficiently navigate online loan systems across 10 provinces and 3 territories, as well as several internal platforms (such as Banner and Blackbaud Awards Management). Therefore, exceptional data entry skills and a strong command of Excel and email communications (including mail merges) are essential.
As a Loans Advisor, you will serve as a key resource for students, parents, staff, government funding agencies, and financial institutions.
Your role will demand independent judgment and decision-making, supported by a comprehensive understanding of current University and government policies and regulations.
You will frequently demonstrate your analytical and problem-solving abilities by assisting students in exploring options to maximize their access to student loan programs and government funding.
Regular opportunities will arise for you to showcase your strong research skills, including gathering and analyzing pertinent information to assess and assist with complex cases.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills are necessary to foster positive relationships with students and colleagues across all organizational levels.
Additionally, you will engage in campus and community initiatives to disseminate information regarding loan and scholarship programs, as well as to support financial literacy efforts related to loan applications, repayment strategies, budgeting, and more.
The University of Lethbridge is currently conducting a job classification review for positions under the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE). Consequently, the classification level assigned to this position may be subject to adjustment as a result of this review.
Position Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess an undergraduate degree or diploma in Business Administration, Management, or a related field, along with 3 to 5 years of relevant professional experience in student loan advising, government benefit services, or financial services.
Experience in an office environment is preferred.
Strong attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and a high level of computer proficiency, coupled with a solid understanding of personal finance options (including credit, government student aid, loans, and budgeting) are required.
Analytical and critical thinking skills are essential for success in this role.
Starting Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE): $4, $5,114.00 monthly. Full Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE): $4, $5,652.00 monthly (AUPE - Grade 9).
