Our organization operates province-wide, employing 300 staff members and collaborating with 1,200 private practice lawyers to assist individuals in overcoming their legal challenges in over 75 communities.

Candidate Profile

Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Legal Services Manager, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Managing cases under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act from initial custody to trial conclusion or resolution.
  • Representing children in high-conflict family law and divorce proceedings.
  • Handling Emergency Protection Order cases.
  • Addressing matters related to the Family Law Act and Divorce Act.
  • Effectively managing high-conflict situations.
  • Negotiating favorable resolutions to achieve timely, cost-effective, and sustainable outcomes for clients.
  • Maintaining accurate and comprehensive statistical records.
  • Adhering to office policies and procedures.
  • Participating in performance evaluations and staff meetings as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Law degree from an accredited institution.
  • Active membership with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Family Law, particularly in Child Welfare, Emergency Protection Orders, and representing children in complex family law cases.
  • Strong background in litigation.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity with the Rules of Court, Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act, Protection Against Family Violence Act, Family Law Act, Family Property Act, and Divorce Act.
  • Proficiency in alternative dispute resolution methods, including mediation and negotiation.
  • Strong legal research, writing, drafting, and analytical skills.
  • Advocacy, problem-solving, and conflict resolution capabilities.
  • Effective time management and ability to handle competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to operate in high-pressure and high-conflict environments.
  • Competence in investigating facts, identifying issues, and advising clients on appropriate legal actions.
  • Awareness of community resources available for complex legal situations.
