Your Opportunity: Under the limited supervision of the Manager, Infrastructure, the Connectivity Technician is tasked with the installation and maintenance of classroom technology, including projectors, screens, whiteboards, and video-conferencing systems. This role involves managing data and voice networks by executing tasks such as running, pulling, terminating, and splicing cables, as well as fibre termination and the installation of telecommunications equipment, routers, switches, and cable trays. Additionally, the Connectivity Technician may assist in the administration of audio-visual and voice system software accounts and provide training or guidance on audio-visual and telecom technologies to IT, media, and classroom services personnel. The role emphasizes a proactive approach to enhancing value and addressing the needs of College stakeholders while staying informed about best practices and industry developments through educational opportunities and technical literature.

Functions and Duties:

  1. Plans network installations by reviewing customer requests, technical specifications, and relevant documentation.
  2. Handles the physical installation of IT hardware, including mounting televisions, projectors, sound systems, network switches, and wireless access points.
  3. Installs and maintains digital communication networks, collaborating with internal service providers as needed.
  4. Performs jack installations, cross connections, and patch panel setups related to telecom and audio-visual systems.
  5. Diagnoses and resolves circuit issues effectively.
  6. Maintains accurate documentation to ensure current records and proper equipment labeling.
  7. Manages an inventory of spare parts, including cables and telecommunication devices, and orders supplies as necessary.
  8. Evaluates installation sites and prepares necessary diagrams for renovations and projects.
  9. Oversees contractor cabling work to ensure compliance with established standards.
  10. Contributes to the development of policies and procedures for network and telephone equipment.
  11. Assists in managing voice systems accounts.
  12. Adheres to all safety regulations.
  13. Stays updated on best practices and industry trends through ongoing education and technical publication reviews.
  14. Performs other related duties as required.

Education and Experience: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, along with graduation from a two-year post-secondary program in a related field. A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of network design is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with voice systems.
  • Ability to frequently lift and transport equipment weighing up to 20 kg, and occasionally more.
  • Capability to work in confined spaces when necessary.
  • Effective prioritization and organization of work tasks.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent customer interaction and communication skills.
  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.
