Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant, Virology Specialist to join our team at the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). As a Laboratory Assistant, Virology Specialist, you will play a critical role in supporting the laboratory team in the preparation and testing of specimens, as well as maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and test specimens for virology testing, including staining slides, performing concentration procedures, and inoculating to various media.
- Prepare culture media and stock solutions, including weighing dehydrated media and chemicals, dissolving in water or other solvents, measuring pH and adjusting as required, and dispensing media.
- Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment, including refrigerators, freezers, centrifuges, and testing equipment, ensuring they are in good working order and performing routine maintenance tasks.
- Receive and check orders, verify accuracy of invoices, and maintain stock control records.
- Perform administrative support duties, including producing labels, inputting data into computer programs, and maintaining patient and specimen information.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment, adhering to established cleaning and disinfection schedules and procedures.
Requirements
- Completion of Grade 12 and successful completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant training program, plus one year's recent, related experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively and work independently and in cooperation with others.
- Ability to operate related equipment and maintain physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada.
