The Role

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team in Kiel, Germany. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, selecting, evaluating, and documenting mechanical components and their interconnections within our bridge systems. Your expertise will contribute to the development of market-leading performance and reliability, while minimizing production costs and ensuring maintainability over an extended lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct studies, experiments, research, and tests to contribute to the design and development of navigation and bridge system products, adhering to established codes, standards, drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Create and update mechanical designs based on COTS, military-grade products, and customized solutions, including the design and specification of parts and components.
  • Assist in writing and maintaining the company's mechanical engineering standards and best practices.
  • Train and mentor junior mechanical engineers on the company's mechanical standards and best practices.
  • Update and maintain the company's parts database.
  • Review hardware requirements, produce hardware design documents, ensuring the proposed solution meets the stated requirements.
  • Create mechanical designs and provide information to CAD team members for drawing production.
  • Review designs for adherence to industry and government standards.
  • Prepare written plans, calculations, designs, specifications, and material lists.
  • Carry out technical tasks requiring accuracy of calculations, completeness of data, and adherence to prescribed methods.
  • Interpret and analyze design data in preparing feasibility studies and prepare reports for assigned work, resolving technical problems within the scope of the assignment.
  • Provide design information and guidance to support personnel, and occasionally to suppliers, in preparation of detailed design, design testing, and prototype fabrication.
  • Ensure that the resulting design meets system, customer, and budgetary requirements and is compliant with industry and government standards.
  • Clearly communicate technical and design solutions to other departments.
  • Execute engineering change requests (CRs) as well as provide supporting justification data.
  • Follow workplace operating and environmental, health, and safety procedures and guidelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field plus 5+ years of practical mechanical engineering experience.
  • Experience with mechanical design and design for manufacturing.
  • Experience with vibration, shock, thermal, and structural analysis (FEA and MathCAD).
  • Working knowledge of product certification testing to civilian and military standards.
  • Proven ability to analyze and solve hardware problems.
  • Experience with SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite and SharePoint.
  • Working knowledge of peripheral equipment, test, diagnostic, and measuring equipment.
  • Ability to thrive as a member of a project team.
  • Organized, able to handle multiple projects, and prioritize workload.
  • Working knowledge of certification to standards – knowledge of Shipbuilding codes an asset – for example: Lloyds Rules.
  • Ability to design in a strategic manner taking into consideration reliability, ease of manufacture, and cost.
