Position Overview
The Planning Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the planning team by conducting thorough research and analysis. This position involves assisting with the development approval process, heritage planning initiatives, and various incentive programs. The technician will also be responsible for managing civic addressing, maintaining data management systems, and fulfilling the mapping requirements of the department.
Key Responsibilities
Uphold the core values and competencies of Chatham-Kent Execute all technical and administrative tasks necessary for processing development applications Create and sustain planning-related maps and resources utilizing GIS technology Perform research and analysis for planning projects and studies as assigned Organize, input, and maintain geo-spatial and planning-related data Conduct GIS analysis and modeling to support municipal and external agency projects Review and process applications for the Community Improvement Plan Financial Incentive Program Manage Heritage Designations, including the preparation of notices, by-laws, and reports Assist the Planner with local heritage matters and undertake specific assignments for the Heritage Chatham-Kent Committee Administer the Heritage Tax Relief Program Coordinate and participate in public information sessions Aid in the preparation of documents for Ontario Land Tribunal cases Maintain essential planning documents such as the Official Plan and Zoning By-law Oversee CityView and/or other land use management systems Update and manage content on the Planning Services website Coordinate civic addressing in urban settings Address inquiries from staff, the public, other departments, agencies, developers, and Council regarding planning mattersRequired Qualifications
A college certificate or diploma in Urban and Regional Planning or a related field, with a focus on GIS, and 6 months to 2 years of relevant experience Experience in a planning technician role Familiarity with the development approval process, GIS mapping, and data management Proficiency in preparing, updating, and interpreting Official Plans and Zoning By-laws Knowledge of the Planning Act, Provincial Policy Statement, Ontario Heritage Act, Municipal Act, and related regulations Experience in producing and maintaining planning-related maps using GIS Capability to conduct intermediate to advanced GIS analysis and modeling Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with facilitation and presentation abilities Excellent customer service skills Proven organizational skills with the ability to manage tight deadlines and competing priorities Proficiency in GIS and CityView or similar software Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)Additional Qualifications
Experience in a municipal setting is an assetCertifications and Memberships
Current membership or eligibility for membership with the Canadian Association of Certified Planning Technicians (CACPT) and/or the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI)Work Environment
Primarily an indoor position with weekday hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.Remote Work Policy
This position allows for remote work, subject to supervisor discretion based on the Working Remotely Policy. On-site meetings may be required to fulfill essential responsibilities.
Driver's License Requirements
A valid Province of Ontario driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle are necessary for travel related to job duties.
Background Check
Candidates will undergo a background check prior to employment, which may include a Police Criminal Record Check, verification of education/certifications, and reference checks.
Physical Requirements
Constant sitting for computer tasks and occasional driving for meetings and site inspections. Frequent use of a computer mouse.Compensation and Benefits
This permanent full-time position offers an annual salary range of $58,987 to $66,708, along with benefits including participation in the OMERS pension plan and sick/vacation entitlements. After a successful 3-month waiting period, candidates will also receive a comprehensive group benefits package.
