Job Title: American Sign Language Specialist Teacher

We are seeking a highly skilled American Sign Language (ASL) Specialist Teacher to join our team at the Burnaby School District. The successful candidate will provide leadership and support in ASL, with a focus on literacy, to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide expertise and services in ASL, with a focus on literacy, to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Collaborate with educational teams to create materials in ASL and model visual-tactile strategies.
  • Provide oversight of students with documented barriers to accessing curriculum through auditory channels alone and support their development of expressive and receptive language skills in ASL.
  • Communicate with educational teams and students in English and American Sign Language, and share knowledge of ASL, Deaf culture, and history.
  • Conduct American Sign Language assessments (receptive and expressive) for students and staff.
  • Collaborate with the POPDHH team to create resource videos in ASL for educational teams and student use, with a focus on literacy.
Requirements:
  • Native ASL user (ASLPI: 4+) with a bachelor's degree in American Sign Language (ASL), ASL Cultural Studies, Curriculum, or equivalent courses.
  • Minimum of three (3) years' experience working with children in a K-12 public education environment.
  • Possess or be eligible for a valid BC teaching certificate.
  • Holds ASL teaching/instructing experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and experience in the preparation of formal reports, oral/written presentations, and statistical analysis.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer skills and related software applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent action in the performance of all duties.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout the province of British Columbia.
