About Us
At AltaML, we are redefining the landscape of applied artificial intelligence. Our teams are organized around specific projects within the public sector, under the guidance of experienced Project Delivery Managers, Product Owners, and Senior Machine Learning Developers. Our goal is to create functional models that facilitate informed strategic decision-making regarding the implementation of essential AI technologies in the public sector.
Contract Details
This position is a paid contract with a duration of four months. Additionally, there is potential for extension to eight or twelve months, depending on mutual interest.
Role Overview
As a Junior Machine Learning Engineer, you will engage in public sector machine learning initiatives, delivering impactful solutions to our partners, including various government departments. Our mission at GovLab AI is to exemplify how applied AI can transform the public sector while fostering the development of in-demand machine learning and AI skills across Alberta and beyond.
Our unique program is designed to provide you with hands-on experience, equipping you for future professional success. Throughout the contract, you will be integrated into a team focused on specific use cases identified by our public sector partners. You will gain exposure to a variety of tools and acquire experience in multiple fields related to AI, machine learning, and data processing. Resources and mentorship will be provided to support your growth and career advancement. Teams will operate under the AltaML methodology, developing working models for viable use cases and guiding recommendations for implementation.
What You Will Do:
- Engage in team planning sessions and educational workshops
- Analyze data to comprehend its overall structure and scope
- Identify appropriate metrics to evaluate the success of models and projects
- Collaborate with teams to prepare data for analysis and model creation
- Discover trends, insights, and key features to inform the application of machine learning solutions
- Develop models based on available data and defined problem sets
- Create proof-of-concept working models for viable use cases
- Propose innovative solutions to challenges and provide detailed recommendations for model integration into business processes
- Present and communicate your team's findings to AltaML and public sector partners
- Familiarize yourself with various data processing tools and AI/ML algorithms
- Conduct independent research and connect with peers to enhance domain knowledge and learn cutting-edge techniques
What You Bring:
- Current enrollment in a post-secondary degree program at a recognized institution
- Basic knowledge and experience in Python and data science libraries such as pandas, scikit-learn, and matplotlib
- Understanding of machine learning principles and software development
- Able to commit to a full-time schedule during the internship
- Preferred qualifications include:
- Familiarity with version control systems like Git
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Strong communication skills, capable of engaging in client discussions and delivering professional presentations
