The Climate and Environment division is tasked with implementing our Environmental Management strategy, which includes initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, enhance waste management, conserve water resources, and protect the local ecosystem.
Position Overview
The Sustainability Archaeologist at Vancouver International Airport plays a crucial role in various aspects of environmental stewardship. This position is responsible for the development and execution of the airport's archaeological initiatives, conducting environmental evaluations, and offering expert guidance in the planning and management of archaeological resources to support all development projects. The role includes overseeing archaeological field operations, such as excavations and other activities that disturb the ground, while also assessing the environmental implications of these actions. The Sustainability Archaeologist serves as a key liaison among diverse stakeholder groups, promoting communication and collaboration to ensure the airport's sustainable development while safeguarding its archaeological legacy and minimizing its ecological impact.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Providing expert guidance in the planning and management of archaeological resources for all development projects.
- Conducting thorough audits, including field inspections, assessments of sites, and excavations, particularly at the beginning of projects or in response to unexpected findings.
- Preparing and assisting in the creation of cultural resource survey reports, data management, impact assessments, and permitting processes for assigned projects, while ensuring regulatory compliance and effective resource management.
- Developing and implementing the airport's Archaeological Program, establishing clear objectives and timelines.
- Representing the Airport Authority at public meetings, information sessions, and conferences, while consulting with industry stakeholders, tenants, government entities, and other departments on environmental and archaeological matters.
- Supervising 1-2 staff members or students involved in program support, as well as managing several professional consultants concurrently.
Key Qualifications Include:
- A University Degree in Archaeology or Anthropology with a focus on archaeology, along with registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Archaeologist.
- A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in archaeological and environmental resource management, preferably in relation to infrastructure projects, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with local First Nations groups, including Urban Indigenous communities.
- Experience engaging with provincial regulatory agencies, municipal staff, and various levels of government.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with strong conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation abilities.
