DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Medical Laboratory Technologist, the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for a variety of tasks including: collecting blood samples from patients of all ages, adhering to established protocols as outlined in the laboratory manual; conducting electrocardiograms (ECGs); ensuring quality assurance, maintenance, and troubleshooting of urinalysis and other laboratory equipment; preparing and processing specimens for testing; coordinating specimen referrals to other Lakeridge Health facilities or external laboratories, including Microbiology and Pathology; scheduling appointments and managing patient registration; maintaining cleanliness of the work area and equipment; reporting any unusual occurrences involving patients during the execution of duties; adhering to safety and infection control protocols; and performing other related tasks as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Medical Laboratory Assistant certification from an accredited institution;
  • Certification from MLPAO (OSMT) and/or CSMLS as a Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician (MLA/T) is mandatory;
  • Recent experience in a comprehensive MLA role and familiarity with relevant procedures;
  • Proven experience as a Laboratory Assistant, including phlebotomy and ECG skills in a clinical or laboratory environment;
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time-management abilities;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions;
  • Understanding of infection control principles and practices;
  • Knowledge of WHMIS regulations;
  • Current TDG certification is preferred;
  • Physically capable of performing duties that involve lifting, bending, sitting, walking, and prolonged standing;
  • Proficient computer and typing skills;
  • Must have a satisfactory performance history;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the core values of Inclusion, Compassion, Innovation, Teamwork, and Joy;
  • Understanding of and commitment to Lakeridge Health's comprehensive safety programs, including staff, patient, and environmental safety, and participation in regular training in this area;

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment terms are governed by the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and OPSEU Local 348.

Successful external candidates must provide a satisfactory Criminal Investigation Reference for the vulnerable sector.
