Job Summary

Fraser Health is seeking a highly skilled Mental Health Clinician to join our Short-Term Assessment and Response Team (START). As a key member of our team, you will provide comprehensive assessment, treatment, and referral coordination for youth and families in acute crisis.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough assessments to identify clients' and families' social, emotional, and cultural needs, and develop appropriate treatment recommendations.
  • Assess the need for psychiatric evaluation and arrange for this service using our community psychiatrist.
  • Provide comprehensive therapeutic clinical counseling, including short-term individual and family therapy, using evidence-based models such as Brief Therapy and Crisis Intervention.
  • Develop treatment plans and act as a case manager, liaising with community resources and consulting with staff.
  • Provide consultative and direct services to clients, families, and staff regarding community resources and access to these resources.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of in-services, education sessions, presentations, and training to clients, families, staff, and other caregivers.
  • Network with community agencies and Fraser Health hospitals to develop relationships that enhance intra-agency cooperation.
  • Participate in ongoing social research as required.
  • Complete statistics, case records, assessment reports, and other relevant documentation according to program policies and procedures.
  • Analyze and assist with the interpretation of statistics.
  • Participate in program and community resource development to respond to identified gaps in service and recognized patient needs.
  • Attend team meetings and multi-disciplinary meetings as required.
Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in an applicable social or health sciences program, such as Counseling Psychology.
  • Two years of recent, related experience in adolescent crisis intervention in a mental health setting or hospital emergency department, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Eligibility for registration with a relevant professional association.
  • Valid BC Driver's License and access to a personal vehicle for work-related purposes.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Crisis Intervention Theory and demonstrated skill in crisis intervention with adolescents and families.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Systems Theory and ability to incorporate this into mental health assessments and treatment interventions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in group and family therapy.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the developmental stages of individuals and families, and the issues that may occur in relation to this.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of broad issues pertaining to adolescent mental health problems, including substance misuse among adolescents and families.
  • Knowledge and understanding of diagnostic criteria pertaining to psychiatric diagnoses prevalent in the adolescent population.
  • Knowledge of theory and evidence-based practice related to Developmental Pediatrics, Neuropsychiatric conditions, and other relevant areas.
  • Ability to establish rapport with clients and families to explore issues beyond initial presenting concerns.
  • Knowledge and ability to conduct social science research.
  • Ability to organize workload and prioritize responsibilities, and work effectively with others in a multi-disciplinary team model.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in a continuously changing and complex environment.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills, and ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others.
  • Physical ability to perform duties of the job.
