At Yukon University Research Centre, we are committed to generating and disseminating knowledge that enhances our understanding of the world. We are passionate about addressing unique challenges and fostering local innovation.
As a vital member of the YSPOR (Yukon Strategy for Patient Oriented Research) Unit, the Senior Research Professional will spearhead, support, and execute patient-centered research initiatives throughout the Yukon. This role encompasses a broad interpretation of patient-oriented research, engaging communities and individuals with lived experiences.
The successful candidate will lead demonstration projects, collaborating closely with YSPOR's First Nation Community Research Coordinators. This position requires partnership with NGOs, First Nations, and governmental bodies to bolster research capacity, including the formulation of research inquiries and grant proposals.
Responsibilities also include establishing research agreements with First Nations, involving People with Lived Experience (PWLE) throughout the research process, and facilitating training in patient-oriented research.
The ideal candidate will possess a relevant degree, preferably at the PhD level, in a pertinent health discipline, along with experience in mentoring students, data analysis, and collaboration with Indigenous organizations/governments.
Essential qualifications include:
- Graduate-level education in a relevant health field is encouraged; preference may be given to those holding a Ph.D.
- A combination of relevant post-secondary education and professional experience may be considered equivalent, or an Indigenous knowledge keeper recognized by their community.
- A minimum of 5 years of related experience for candidates without a Ph.D.
Demonstrated competencies:
- Strong project and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and perform well under pressure;
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Canadian health and social science research landscape, with significant experience in multi-disciplinary research methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative analysis;
- Experience collaborating with Indigenous communities, governmental and non-governmental organizations on research initiatives.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Experience in designing and executing complex research projects in an academic setting;
- Exceptional interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, capable of engaging productively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders;
- Understanding and respect for Yukon First Nation history, practices, teachings, language, values, and beliefs;
- Experience working with patient partners/people with lived experience/community;
- Ability to create student research projects and supervise and mentor students;
- Proven ability to collaborate with diverse groups, including governmental, non-governmental, and academic organizations on shared projects, setting and achieving common goals;
- Flexibility to work non-standard hours as needed to meet deadlines or travel;
- Innovative mindset to identify opportunities and take proactive measures;
- Strong problem-solving capabilities;
- Excellent numeracy and academic writing skills;
- Extensive experience in a computerized work environment, proficient in web-based applications, email, and the use of spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation software;
- Expertise in research knowledge mobilization, with the ability to translate complex findings into actionable insights and ensure accessibility and impact across various communities.
