As an Energy Solutions Engineer – Distributed Systems, you will collaborate with the business development team to identify, create, and implement distributed energy initiatives with commercial, industrial, and institutional energy clients across North America. Reporting to the Engineering Solutions Manager, this role is ideal for an engineer who possesses the drive, ambition, and expertise in energy storage project design, financial assessment, proposal creation, customer and site evaluation, and management of partners and processes throughout the development and contracting phases of energy storage projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the technical proposal efforts for complex Distributed Energy Resource (DER) development opportunities in collaboration with the business development team.
- Work alongside multi-departmental teams to develop and implement technologies that support microgrids, solar plus storage, stand-alone systems (including solar and storage), and other DER systems.
- Conduct detailed design engineering (design, enhancement, and maintenance) of DER controls, monitoring, and metering systems.
- Support complex technical solution sales as the electricity market evolves, providing sophisticated solutions to meet customer needs.
- Assist clients in optimizing their facilities with behind-the-meter DERs to maximize revenue opportunities, improve power reliability, and achieve sustainability goals.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering with a relevant discipline (e.g., Electrical, Power Systems, etc.).
- Professional Engineer designation.
- Prior experience in wind energy, solar energy, energy storage, diesel generators, microgrid control systems, and power conversion systems.
- 5-10 years of professional experience for intermediate resources with a minimum of 4 years of directly related experience.
- Understanding of SCADA systems and integration of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) into SCADA systems.
- Familiarity with communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, 2030.5, and 61850.
- Experience with distribution system protection and controls related to the integration of DERs.
- Comprehension of the challenges utilities face with increasing DER penetration and the alternative business models they are exploring.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity standards and protocols.
- Proficiency with software tools such as PVsyst, WAsP, Vortex for resource modeling, and CYME, Homer, PSCAD for system modeling.
- Strong communication, analytical, presentation, and proposal development skills.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and inquisitive.
- Proficiency with MS Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Salesforce, or comparable CRM systems.
- Willingness to travel within North America as required and possess a valid driver's license.
