We are seeking a highly skilled Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Engineer to join our Distribution Engineering Department at Manitoba Hydro. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in approving customer and consultant DER interconnection service applications, providing technical guidance, and participating in research and modeling to maintain the distribution distributed energy resource interconnection requirements (DDERIR) standard.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review, clarify, and approve customer and consultant DER interconnection service applications, ensuring compliance with Manitoba Hydro's Distribution DER interconnection requirements.
- Conduct research to refine hosting capacity criteria, update the DDERIR, and improve DER interconnection processes, collaborating with internal stakeholders and external experts.
- Develop system modeling practices for grid forming and grid following interconnections, leveraging your expertise in power systems and electrical engineering.
- Participate in complex studies to develop requirements for DER design, planning, protection, performance, and operations, working closely with cross-functional teams.
- Undertake and seal designs, prepare drawings, bills of material, estimates, and specifications for projects related to DER, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
- Benchmark and assess the electrical performance of DER facilities, identifying areas for improvement and implementing corrective actions.
- Participate in developing commissioning procedures for DER systems and participate in field commissioning, ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure.
- Employ project management techniques, adhering to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, to ensure effectively delivered projects that meet Manitoba Hydro's standards.
- Incorporate safety fundamentals in the design process, utilizing Human Error Reduction and Risk Management techniques developed by Corporate Safety, to minimize risks and ensure a safe working environment.
- Participate in external and internal utility system-related committees, working groups, research & development, and staff, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications:
- Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a university of recognized standing, with a minimum of six years' experience in related utility work covering visibility, automation, reliability, protection, generation, procurement, and commissioning, including a minimum of two years' experience directing others.
- Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba.
- Demonstrated knowledge and practice of Manitoba Hydro's Distribution DER interconnection requirements, planning, and protection criteria.
- Demonstrated experience and skill managing projects using recognized project management skills.
- Demonstrated experience and skill employing lean and critical thinking skills to improve processes and procedures.
- Must obtain and maintain a current Personnel Risk Assessment and a 'Clear' security rating in accordance with Manitoba Hydro policy P513.
- Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Training is required and must be completed prior to transfer date and renewed annually.
- Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Province of Manitoba Motor Vehicle Driver's Licence.
- Required to travel by all modes of transportation, i.e., air, land, and water.
