Job Overview
The Specialist in Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) is tasked with conducting RAM analysis and engineering to support I&T solutions. The primary objective is to guarantee that these solutions exhibit high levels of robustness, reliability, and availability. This encompasses system and product analysis, modeling, and requirements evaluation during the development phase, as well as analyzing field RAM data to establish RAM Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and to drive necessary corrective action initiatives.
Distinct specializations may exist for hardware and software RAM. The technologies utilized primarily include distributed digital control systems, communication networks, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and both embedded and virtualized computing. The incumbent is expected to collaborate with other technical teams within the rail industry, industry organizations such as the Transportation Technology Center Inc. (TTCI), and regulatory bodies like the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Therefore, exceptional communication skills are essential to represent Canadian National Railway Company’s interests and influence industry direction. This position demands a high level of accountability and initiative.
Key Responsibilities
Solution RAM Evaluations
- Review and validate solution requirements for RAM.
- Identify non-functional requirements and performance targets for RAM.
- Conduct analysis and modeling to forecast RAM behavior.
- Comply with the I&T Development Process.
Solution RAM Field Performance
- Assign requirements to solutions and products to ensure they facilitate the measurement of RAM Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Utilize field performance metrics to pinpoint key contributors and initiate corrective action plans as needed.
- Examine vendor specifications, test outcomes, and analysis documentation.
- Engage in failure review boards for selected vendors.
- Assess corrective action plans proposed by vendors.
- Ensure the completion of vendor corrective action plans.
Qualifications
Experience
- 5-10 years of overall professional experience.
- 5 years of experience in RAM engineering for complex systems, or 7 years in product development for high reliability/availability or safety-critical systems with accountability for product field performance.
Skills/Knowledge
- Familiarity with hardware and/or software design and development practices focused on high reliability and availability applications.
- Understanding of RAM analysis techniques such as failure rate prediction, Reliability Block Diagrams (RBD), Markov models, Monte Carlo methods, Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
- Analysis of reliability and failure field data, statistical estimation, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
- Strong critical thinking and judgment skills.
- Ability to quickly assimilate new information and apply it effectively.
- Capacity to work autonomously.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple projects concurrently.
Education/Certification/Designation
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field with equivalent experience.
Assets
- Knowledge of product design and standards within the rail industry.
- Familiarity with operations in the rail or other transportation industries.
Working Conditions
This role may necessitate occasional business travel within North America in accordance with company policy.
This position is classified as a grade 9. For internal candidates, be aware that the grade level of the position may be adjusted based on the employee's experience.
