Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Energy Transition Investment Banking Associate to join our team at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. As an Energy Transition Investment Banking Associate, you will play a key role in providing investment banking services to clients in the renewable and conventional power, utilities, midstream, upstream energy, infrastructure, energy transition, and climate technology sectors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Research and Analysis
    • Conduct industry research and quantitative analysis to create and direct complex financial analysis and models.
    • Extract the big picture implications of such analysis to assist in the identification and/or analysis of investment banking business opportunities.
  • Proposal Development
    • Play a key role in the preparation of client proposals, pitchbooks, and the execution of new and existing client mandates.
    • Prepare industry and financial analysis to assist with the development of client recommendations.
  • Financial Modeling
    • Develop and audit sophisticated financial models.
  • Relationship Building
    • Grow your internal and external networks by coordinating client-focused and/or deal-focused brainstorming sessions with relevant team members and product specialists.
    • Develop relationships and actively communicate with various appropriate contacts at our clients.
    • Develop and maintain an internal network with product groups and other business groups.
    • Develop and maintain an external network with the market (i.e., key stakeholders, clients, prospects, etc.).
  • Due Diligence
    • Assist in company due diligence investigations.
  • Support
    • Support senior investment banking colleagues and maintain the group's databases on a current basis.
Requirements
  • Education
    • Finance, accounting, mathematics, computer science, or economics undergraduate degree.
    • Completion of a CA or CFA is preferred, and an MBA or Masters in Finance is an asset.
  • Experience
    • A minimum of 3 to 4 years of previous experience in one or more of investment banking, corporate finance, private equity, project financing, tax equity, or investment review.
    • Experience must have included meaningful financial modeling and analysis.
    • Working knowledge of the power/renewables, utilities, infrastructure, midstream, and/or energy transition sectors as well as direct investment banking experience are assets.
  • Skills
    • Excellent analytical ability, including demonstrated knowledge of valuation techniques and practices, including cash flow and returns analyses.
    • Knowledge of accounting principles relating to financial statement preparation and business combinations.
    • Strong quantitative technical skills as it relates to basic computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), industry technology (FactSet, Bloomberg), and other applicable software.
  • Personal Qualities
    • Success-oriented, extremely dedicated, and motivated individual with high career aspirations.
    • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills to develop, manage, and leverage relationships with clients and internal and/or external business partners.
    • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills sufficient to provide detailed explanation and interpretation of factual and conceptual information and ideas related to complex technical and conceptual issues.
    • Unquestioned professionalism, ethics, and reputation and proven ability to exercise strong independent judgment when making business decisions and/or representing the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
