Position Overview
As a Mechanical Supervisor, you will oversee daily operations at a primary terminal, guiding unionized personnel to guarantee that railcar inspections, maintenance, and repairs are conducted safely and efficiently. This position may also require on-call duties at remote locations, ensuring the maintenance and repair of railcars and locomotives outside of main terminals. Leading the operations of a 24/7 function, your role is vital in achieving availability, reliability, and performance targets to fulfill our commitments to customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure safety compliance and enforce regulations.
- Train and mentor mechanical staff on safe and efficient work practices.
- Oversee online failure investigations and implement corrective actions.
- Enhance safety outcomes through regular evaluations and safety audits.
- Respond to hazardous material incidents and ensure public safety.
- Collaborate with the Dangerous Goods Officer to uphold safety standards.
- Develop, train, and implement standard operating procedures.
- Monitor and ensure safe operations, focusing on accident and injury prevention.
- Lead onboarding and training initiatives for new employees and supervisors.
- Ensure compliance with Performance Monitoring Reporting Compliance (PMRC) standards.
- Manage preventative maintenance plans for yard vehicles and equipment.
- Meet audit and compliance requirements, including inspections and recertifications.
- Participate actively in the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC).
- Engage in the Apprentice Committee Workplace Location Joint Apprentice Committee (WLJAC).
Problem Solving and Decision Making
- Coordinate responses to incidents affecting yard and line operations, collaborating with Transportation and Engineering teams.
- Utilize data to assess inspection and repair productivity.
- Identify actions to enhance fleet reliability and optimize inspection processes.
- Maintain effective teamwork and communication among staff and contractors.
Workload Planning and Organization
- Ensure effective crew utilization by supervising inspections and tests.
- Certify that inspection standards are upheld to meet service schedules.
- Prioritize repairs to minimize delays and improve fleet availability.
- Drive fleet reliability metrics, focusing on bad order status and delays.
- Maximize overall utilization, considering productivity and labor costs.
- Manage inventory of personal protective equipment (PPE) and parts.
Leadership and Supervision
- Communicate organizational goals and policies clearly to staff.
- Evaluate performance and ensure accountability for both union and non-union personnel.
- Conduct investigations and manage disciplinary actions as per collective agreements.
- Foster positive employee behaviors through feedback and recognition.
- Oversee payroll administration and time-off requests.
- Manage accounts payable processes, including invoice approvals.
Working Environment
The Mechanical Shop operates continuously, regardless of weather conditions. The Mechanical Supervisor works on rotating shifts to cover the 24/7 operations, leading the team to ensure safe and efficient maintenance and repair of locomotives.
Qualifications
- Experience in electrical and mechanical fields.
- At least 4 years of supervisory experience with both union and non-union employees.
- A minimum of 3 years in a railroad mechanical shop or a similar role.
Education and Certifications
- High School Diploma.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- Technician or Technologist Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical fields.
Technical Skills
- Strong time management abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word) and relevant applications.
- Comprehensive understanding of car construction, operation, and mechanical railroad standards.
