Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Genetics Technologist to join our team at the Diagnostic Scientific Centre. As a Clinical Genetics Technologist, you will play a critical role in performing and interpreting routine and complex testing for various genetic conditions using molecular and cytogenetic techniques.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform and interpret routine and complex testing for various genetic conditions using molecular and cytogenetic techniques.
  • Participate in results entry into the laboratory information system (LIS), report generation, quality control, proficiency testing, lab safety procedures, literature review, test method evaluation, and document writing.
  • Maintain lab equipment and supplies, train students and fellows/residents, participate in accreditation activities, and pre-analytical testing processes including accessioning.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate and timely results.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in genetic testing and molecular techniques.
Requirements
  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree plus advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics.
  • Active or eligible for registration with College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).
  • Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification in Clinical Genetics may be acceptable as an equivalent to an advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics.
  • Experience in human cytogenetic processing and analysis, including proper use of ISCN nomenclature and specialized computer imaging platforms for karyotyping and FISH analysis.
  • Experience with tissue culture techniques.
  • Proven critical thinking, analytical, problem-solving, planning, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong attention to detail as well as superior organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize work and deliver accurate work under stressful conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with conflicting and changing priorities, deadlines, and duties.
  • English fluency with exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical knowledge of appropriate methodology and testing techniques applied in a molecular genetics/molecular diagnostic laboratory.
  • Two years of recent experience in a diagnostic genetic laboratory performing cytogenetic or molecular genetic testing and interpretation.
  • Five years of experience with cancer chromosome and FISH analysis.
  • Experience with next generation sequencing.
