We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel to join our team at the Government of Alberta. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in providing legal and administrative services to support the efficient administration of justice.
Key Responsibilities- Assist the Court in the provision of legal and administrative services to support the administration of justice.
- Prepare for the hearing of appeals and applications, conduct research and legal analysis, and prepare legal memoranda and judgments.
- Review appeal materials and consult with Justices on legal issues that may require additional research, including assigning and overseeing research by Court students.
- Stay apprised of changes in legislation and case law.
- Maintain and update internal legal resources for use by the judiciary and judicial staff.
- Draft and/or edit papers, speeches, or presentation materials as requested.
- Participate in Court administration committee work and help manage the student program, including mentoring articling students.
- Adapt to change and work with evolving technologies such as e-filing, paperless court records, and electronic hearings.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including speechwriting skills.
- Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, prioritizing, and multi-tasking skills.
- Well-developed legal research skills.
- Ability to work in a highly demanding environment with limited supervision.
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree supplemented with a minimum of four (4) years directly related legal experience.
- Extensive experience with Canadian legal research tools, well-developed research and analytical skills, and exceptional legal writing skills.
- Prior court or tribunal experience.
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta or eligibility for membership.
- A strong academic standing is essential.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a Master of Laws degree (LLM), law journal and other legal writing experience, supervisory work experience, and written and oral communication skills in French.
