Position Overview
The Clinical Extern serves as an unregulated healthcare provider, collaborating with a dedicated healthcare team under the direct or indirect supervision of a registered healthcare professional. This role is offered on a contractual basis, allowing for part-time hours that may extend to full-time, depending on the needs of the unit. Scheduling will be flexible, accommodating day, evening, night, and weekend shifts as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Operates under the guidance of the assigned registered healthcare professional, adhering to organizational policies and professional standards.
- Collaborates with the registered healthcare professional to ensure the necessary knowledge, skills, and judgment are applied in all tasks.
- Participates in patient assessments and observations as requested.
- Provides assistance with patient mobility, including lifting, turning, transferring, and ambulating in accordance with hospital policies.
- Supports patients with daily living activities as assigned.
- Facilitates patient transport and navigation within the facility.
- Engages patients in recreational activities, such as reading and conversation, and assists with technology and family communications.
- Monitors patients and reports any changes to the supervising registered healthcare professional.
- Responds to patient requests and assists with rounding and call bell responses.
- Ensures patient comfort and safety by maintaining a clean and hazard-free environment.
- Documents all patient care in compliance with hospital policies.
- Assists in obtaining and restocking supplies on the units.
- Seeks assistance with tasks when necessary.
- Exhibits strong problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking abilities.
- Demonstrates excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Communicates effectively and empathetically, both verbally and in writing.
- Contributes as a collaborative team member.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Eligible candidates include students enrolled in:
- Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) or Practical Nursing (PN) programs accredited by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
- Master's degree programs in Occupational Therapy accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT).
- Master's degree programs in Physiotherapy accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC).
- Second or final year Respiratory Therapy programs accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Respiratory Therapy Education.
- Final year undergraduate medical education programs accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS).
- Internationally educated nurses who have initiated registration with the CNO and meet specific criteria.
- At least one year of relevant employment experience with suitable references.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Internet applications.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Consistent attendance and reliability.
- Commitment to maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and take direction when necessary.
- Dedication to professional development and continuing education.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with team members.
- Respect for the roles and contributions of other team members.

Additional Information
