About Our Unit

Our surgical oncology unit is equipped with -beds, providing post-operative care to patients who have undergone surgeries related to gastrointestinal, breast, or urological cancers. Patients are admitted from various departments, including Emergency, ICU, and PACU. Nurse-to-patient ratios typically stand at 4:1 during the day and 6:1 at night. While the majority of our patient population consists of surgical oncology cases (including retroperitoneal, pelvic, visceral, sarcomas, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and thyroid cancer), we also cater to patients from general surgery, palliative care, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments and focused evaluations based on patient requirements
  • Manage complex post-operative patients
  • Administer prescribed medications
  • Maintain peripheral and central venous access
  • Monitor drains, stomas, and Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)
  • Provide education centered around patient and family needs
  • Perform additional duties as required by the job classification

Qualifications

Mandatory:

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Graduate from a CNO-approved bachelor's degree in nursing program or equivalent education and experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN); final-year students may be considered
  • Specialty certification in oncology nursing
  • At least one year of recent experience in adult medical-surgical nursing with advanced skills in ostomy care, TPN, and chest tube management

Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficient teaching skills with a focus on adult learning principles
  • Strong knowledge in pain management (PCA, epidural, CADD), symptom management, skin and wound care, ostomy care, chest tube care, IV therapy, and TPN
