POSITION OVERVIEW

The Chief of Ophthalmology Services is responsible for overseeing the clinical operations of the eye clinic (Kensington Vision and Research Centre) and surgical services (Kensington Eye Institute). This role encompasses accountability for all facets of the business, including patient experience, quality assurance, human resources, financial management, and operational performance. The Chief will work in close collaboration with Kensington's Ophthalmology Medical Director to promote community-based eye care and to establish a center of excellence for innovation, research, and education in the field of ophthalmology.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide administrative leadership and manage operations and personnel within the ophthalmology departments, including both the eye clinic and surgical services.
  • Develop and implement a three-year business strategy for ophthalmology services and the Centre of Excellence at Kensington Health.
  • Encourage collaboration and communication with the Medical Director, physicians, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment of objectives and quality of care.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and quality standards.
  • Stay informed about leading trends in eye care services, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Represent Kensington in external ophthalmology forums, meetings, and events.
  • Collaborate with corporate procurement and digital teams to ensure the availability of necessary supplies and equipment within budgetary constraints.
  • Establish innovative staffing models and initiatives to balance quality of care with fiscal sustainability.
  • Drive revenue generation and manage operational costs to achieve financial objectives.
  • Develop and implement quality improvement and patient safety initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Lead the development and execution of research and education programs in ophthalmology, in partnership with academic and industry collaborators.
  • Identify and pursue new opportunities for growth and innovation in eye care services and technologies.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor, inspiring the team with a compelling vision and coaching individuals to develop their skills and achieve professional growth.
  • Oversee the recruitment and development of a high-performing team, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Implement effective performance management systems that promote high performance, recognize achievements, and address areas for improvement.
  • Create and maintain a positive work environment that enhances employee engagement, satisfaction, and retention.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements and establish HR best practices to optimize operations and mitigate risks.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Extensive experience in leading large-scale clinical and surgical operations.
  • Proven ability to collaborate within community-based healthcare settings, with strong existing relationships across the healthcare industry and provincial government.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience in administrative, financial, and human resource management within a research environment, particularly with funding organizations or large multi-user core facilities.
  • Experience in hospital administration and/or community-based program administration is highly valuable.
  • An ophthalmology background and/or experience is highly beneficial.
  • Proven excellence in fiscal management of departmental budgets, contracts, and project costs.
  • Deep knowledge of the Provincial Health Care system, particularly in provincial funding and decision-making processes to support strategic decision-making at the organizational and partnership level.
  • Proven ability to cultivate partnerships with academic institutions, industry partners, government agencies, and funding bodies.
  • Commitment to integrating Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles and actively seeking perspectives from underrepresented groups.

Required Professional Designation/Certificate:

  • Possess an advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., healthcare, life sciences, public health, business) or equivalent experience.
  • An MBA or Master's in Healthcare Management is an asset.

Pension Plan:

Employees qualify to enroll in the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP).

Working hours:

Day shifts, Monday to Friday, with no forced overtime.
