Position Overview
The Automation Systems Engineer will play a crucial role in enhancing plant safety, quality, and the efficiency of production equipment through various improvement initiatives.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in PLC programming and troubleshooting, with a preference for Siemens systems.
  • Ability to design and implement safe automation solutions for both new and existing machinery to ensure compliance with industry regulations.
  • Preferred qualifications include a licensed electrician certification (309A or 442A).
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing setting, ideally within the automotive sector.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, as well as vision systems and lighting technologies.
  • Proficient in PLC networking and troubleshooting, including experience with storage servers.
  • Knowledge of Ignition software for effective data logging and sharing.
  • Experience with Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLCs, HMIs, VFD drives, and motors.
  • Specific Siemens expertise required in:
    • Profinet and Profibus networking and communication protocols.
    • HMI programming and troubleshooting.
    • SIMATIC Step 7 software (TIA portal).
    • Programming and troubleshooting of Siemens SINAMICS VFD drives.
  • Experience with Omron and Keyence vision systems is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with digital measurement tools such as Eddy current systems and BetaMike measurement systems.
  • Knowledge of Yaskawa servo drive systems.
  • Understanding of induction heating, SCRs, capacitors, and bus bars.

  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar CAD software for creating and updating plant wiring schematics.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to engage professionally with management to enhance company performance.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Team-oriented mindset, capable of collaborating with production, maintenance, and engineering teams.
  • Awareness of Health & Safety and Environmental Policies, including IATF 16949 & ISO 14001.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all company policies, including Health and Safety, Quality, Environmental Systems, and Human Resources guidelines.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to equipment-related issues and safety concerns that affect production.
  • Efficiently program PLCs (Siemens) to meet operational needs.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the work area, including parts and equipment.
  • Complete necessary documentation in a timely manner.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical issues, collaborating with plant millwrights, electricians, IT, and engineering teams.
  • Interpret wiring diagrams, code books, and related documentation.
  • Possess a solid understanding of electrical practices, techniques, and the operation of electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to apprentices as needed.
  • Coordinate with internal departments for design input, fabrication, and modifications to equipment.
  • Ensure timely completion of programming and repairs to avoid production interruptions.
  • Work closely with supervisors to ensure that plant machinery meets production requirements.
  • Assist in validating new or used equipment brought into the plant.
  • Ensure that preventative maintenance programs are executed according to schedule.
  • Conduct troubleshooting of production equipment and maintain records of development and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across all job aspects.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and legislation, including Environmental Legislation and Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Work Environment

  • Work will primarily be conducted on the plant floor, where personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Willingness to work overtime as necessary.

  • Must adhere to Health and Safety regulations, as well as company and plant policies and procedures.
  • Personal Protective Equipment and specific clothing must be worn as required by the company.
