POSITION: Animal Protection Officer (APO)
STATUS: Permanent; Full-time

About the Role:
This role is essential for the timely and effective investigation of animal cruelty allegations, enforcement of animal welfare laws, and ensuring humane treatment of animals while representing the BC SPCA in all matters related to animal protection.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive investigations into reports of animal cruelty.
- Act as an Animal Protection Officer as outlined in relevant legislation.
- Ensure thorough documentation of all investigations and actions taken.
- Safeguard the welfare of animals and the public by enforcing applicable laws and regulations.
- Perform inspections of establishments housing animals to assess their well-being.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls with care and efficiency.
- Utilize knowledge of animal behavior and handling techniques in various situations.
- Assist statutory authorities as needed and provide expert guidance.
- Take custody of animals that are abandoned or in distress.
- Prepare necessary documentation in accordance with legislation and organizational policies.
- Gather evidence to support legal proceedings related to animal cruelty.
- Collaborate with other agencies and the public on cruelty-related matters.
- Fulfill additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education is preferred.
- Completion of relevant training courses in investigation and animal welfare.
- Experience in law enforcement is advantageous.
- Genuine compassion for animals and knowledge of animal welfare standards.
- Strong understanding of applicable laws and regulations.
- Ability to manage workload effectively and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Physical fitness to handle the demands of the role, including lifting and transporting animals.
- Proficient in computer applications such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Successful completion of a criminal record check is required.
