Position Overview

The Environmental Law Clerk will play a crucial role in managing legal files related to environmental and municipal law. This position involves evaluating case facts, determining suitable processes, and planning necessary steps to ensure compliance with critical deadlines.

Key Responsibilities
  • File Management: Upon receiving a new file, prepare and review initial documentation, providing a comprehensive synopsis of facts, legislation, and policy for attorney review.
  • Project Coordination: For files utilizing project management techniques, create and update matter plans, checklists, and fee estimates, while initiating discussions with lawyers to ensure timely progress.
  • Legal Drafting: Independently draft various legal documents, including planning reviews, pleadings, contracts, and correspondence, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and regulations.
  • Document Organization: Systematically organize and maintain document files and case correspondence, utilizing computer databases and imaging software where appropriate.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct thorough searches and evaluations of case law, codes, and legislation, preparing detailed reports on findings.
  • Client Liaison: Communicate directly with clients to gather information, update them on their file status, and address any inquiries within assigned authority.
  • Regulatory Support: Work collaboratively on regulatory, municipal, and land use planning matters, including managing development proposals and preparing planning applications.
Qualifications
  • Law Clerk/Paralegal or Legal Assistant Diploma/Certificate.
  • 5–8 years of experience as a Law Clerk, with a preference for experience in Environmental and Municipal law.
  • 3 to 5 years of land use planning experience or a degree in urban planning, with eligibility for OPPI membership being an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of municipal processes, the Planning Act, and relevant tribunal procedures.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Aptitude for client service in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Proficient in legal research and knowledgeable about current legislation and regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail in legal document accuracy.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, ACL, and Relativity.
